The Manager of Laboratory is a key operational leader responsible for supervising the day-to-day functions of the Laboratory, including oversight of Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS) and Lab Assistants. This role ensures compliance with all institutional, regulatory, and safety standards while maintaining exceptional quality and service in laboratory operations.
This manager serves as the bridge between technical excellence and operational leadership, ensuring the effective distribution of workloads, adherence to protocols, and implementation of best practices. The role supports the achievement of departmental goals through data-driven decision-making, team development, and process improvement.
Core ResponsibilitiesSupervise and support Laboratory staff including CLS and Lab Assistants, ensuring optimal performance, training, and adherence to protocols.
Manage daily laboratory operations to ensure timely, accurate, and high-quality diagnostic testing.
Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state regulations including TJC , CLIA '88 , and California DHS .
Oversee quality control and quality assurance programs, maintaining readiness for inspections or audits.
Monitor staffing levels, manage scheduling, and delegate tasks to ensure seamless operations.
Contribute to budget development and monitor cost-effective operations within the department.
Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Act as a resource and subject matter expert for technical questions, problem resolution, and regulatory guidance.
Education & Training:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related scientific field (required).
Master's degree in a related field (preferred).
Licensure & Certifications:
Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license in good standing (required).
Meets California DHS Laboratory Field Services requirements for licensure.
Experience:
Minimum three (3) years of hands-on clinical experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) in a hospital or reference lab setting.
Minimum three (3) years of laboratory leadership experience (e.g., supervisor, manager); acute care experience strongly preferred.
Knowledge:
Thorough understanding of clinical laboratory science including microbiology, biochemistry, immunology, hematology, and genetics .
Knowledge of laboratory regulatory standards , fiscal management, and personnel oversight.
Demonstrated ability to manage projects, streamline workflow, and improve operational efficiency.
Strong leadership and team-building skills.
Effective communicator-verbal and written.
Proven problem-solver with ability to manage competing priorities.
Proficient in data analysis, quality metrics, and performance reporting.
Familiarity with LIS (Laboratory Information Systems) and EHR platforms.
